How Heartgard Plus works

Heartgard Plus prevents canine heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue stage of heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis) for a month (30 days) after infection and for the treatment and control of ascarids (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) and hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma braziliense).

 

How can you properly administer Heartgard Plus?

Heartgard Plus (ivermectin/pyrantel) should be administered orally at monthly intervals at the recommended minimum dose level of 6 mcg of ivermectin per kilogram (2.72 mcg/lb) and 5 mg of pyrantel (as pamoate salt) per kg (2.27 mg/lb) of body weight. The recommended dosing schedule for the prevention of canine heartworm disease and for the treatment and control of ascarids and hookworms is as follows:

Heartgard Plus is recommended for dogs 6 weeks of age and older. For dogs over 100 lb use the appropriate combination of these chewables.

 

What are the precautions in using Heartgard Plus?

All dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection before starting treatment with Heartgard Plus which is not effective against adult D. immitis. Infected dogs must be treated to remove adult heartworms and microfilariae before initiating a program with Heartgard Plus. While some microfilariae may be killed by the ivermectin in Heartgard Plus at the recommended dose level, Heartgard Plus is not effective for microfilariae clearance. A mild hypersensitivity-type reaction, presumably due to dead or dying microfilariae and particularly involving a transient diarrhea, has been observed in clinical trials with ivermectin alone after treatment of some dogs that have circulating microfilariae.

I have been using Heartgard brands for over 20 years with multiple breeds of dogs, including collies. I have never had a dog develop heartworm disease while on Heartgard products. They are easy to administer; my dogs love the taste. I have purchased products from Pet Shed for years. The prices are very competitive and, even with shipping charges, the prices are still cheaper than on-line sites that offer free shipping. However, one must pay attention to the weight limits; they are in kilograms, not pounds. There are 2.2 kg. per each lb. You don't want to overdose your dog. I give the product and Pet Shed 5 stars; the website is easy to navigate and ordering is simple. Thanks Pet Shed for offering brand name and generic products at great prices!

I have been using Heartgard for six years now and I have no complaints every year my dog tests negative to heartworm how can I go wrong?

I have been purchasing my dogs the Heartgard Plus from Pet Shed for several years now. It does what it is supposed to do. Living in the southern area of the USA those pesky mosquitoes are horrible so a preventative for heartworms is imperative. Heartgard is my answer and having multiple dogs Pet Shed is imperative to hold down costs. Heartgard Plus and Pet Shed....both winners.

My dog hates taking pills so the fact that this product is still available in the chewables makes him very happy. Since using this product he has never had a positive heartworm test that makes me very happy!

I will never buy my dog's heart worm prevention medication from any other source. I used to buy this same exact brand at other, more expensive sources. Now, I can get the same effective medication in a short amount of time from Pet Shed! My dog loves the chewy tablets - it's such an easy way to keep him healthy!
