I have been using brand-name Heartgard for going on 20 years. Being a Registered Veterinary Technician, and knowing that the base ingredient in Heartgard is Ivermectin, I recognize that paying extra for the brand-name is not always necessary. While in veterinary technician school, we used to formulate our own generic heartgard using Ivermectin mixed with some propylene glycol and distribute it out in syringes to people in the class who owned dogs & cats. Finally, someone else caught on that Ivermectin does not have to be marketed with a fancy, well-known brand name in order to be effective against preventing heartworm disease in our pets.
