Amitriptyline has been used for separation anxiety in dogs, other anxious behavior in dogs and cats, excessive grooming (especially when caused by nerve-related pain or itching) and urine spraying in cats. This product is not licensed for use in animals, however there is no equivalent drug available for use in animals currently. Product ContainsAmitriptyline Dosage and AdministrationThe dosage varies depending on the use. 1-2mg/kg twice daily is commonly used in dogs, whilst the dose in cats is often 5-10mg per cat once daily, although the treatment of nerve-related pain will often require higher dosages. Your veterinarian will advise you on the appropriate dose for your pet. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsAmitriptyline should not be used if an animal has shown a previous allergy to any other “tricyclic - antidepressant medication. It should be used with caution in animals with a history of seizures, as it can increase the likelihood of these occurring. The most common side effect seen with amitriptyline is sedation, although dogs may become excitable and develop seizures without a prior history. Heart rhythm disturbances, lowered production of blood cells, diarrhea and vomiting may also be seen. This drug should not be used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (such as selegiline or amitraz).
