Use of topical antibiotics may permit overgrowth of non-susceptible bacteria, fungi, or yeasts. Should this occur, treatment should be instituted with other appropriate agents. Adverse events reported in dogs in association with this product include excessive drinking and urination, vomiting and diarrhea (occasionally bloody). There is some evidence that corticosteroids (such as betamethasone) can be absorbed after topical application and cause systemic effects. Cushing’s syndrome has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated corticosteroid therapy in dogs. Inhibition of the body’s own steroid production following withdrawal of the drug may occur. Corticosteroids may induce the first stage of the birth process if used during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature labor, which may be associated with complications. Additionally, corticosteroids administered to dogs, rabbits and rodents during pregnancy have resulted in birth defects in the young. Administration of recommended dose beyond 7 days may result in delayed wound healing. Animals treated for longer than 7 days should be monitored closely.
