For ear infections, ensure the outer ear is clean and dry and all excess hair has been clipped. Shake the Betagen Otic well before use. Instill 3 to 8 drops of Betagen twice daily into the ear canal(s) for 7-14 days. For superficial infected skin lesions, ensure the area is cleaned before treatment and excessive hair removed. Apply a sufficient amount of Betagen Otic Solution to cover the treatment area twice daily for seven to fourteen days. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsBetagen Otic should not be used in animals with a ruptured ear drum. It should not be used in conjunction with any other medications known to cause ototoxicity. It should not be used in in cases where corticosteroids (such as betamethasone) are contraindicated, nor where injectable corticosteroids are being used. If any adverse effect are noticed, such as hearing or balance problems, discontinue the medication and consult your veterinarian for appropriate therapy. There is some evidence that corticosteroids can be absorbed after topical application and cause systemic effects, such as increased drinking and urination, fluid retention and weight gain. Vomiting and diarrhea (occasionally bloody) have been observed in dogs and cats. Prolonged use or overdosage may suppress the immune system. Cushing’s syndrome has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated corticosteroid therapy in dogs. Administration of corticosteroids may result in delayed wound healing and thinning of the bones, particularly in older animals. Inhibition of the body’s own steroid production following withdrawal of the drug may occur. Corticosteroids may induce the first stage of the birth process if used during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature labor, which may be associated with complications. Additionally, corticosteroids administered to dogs, rabbits and rodents during pregnancy have resulted in birth defects in the young. Therefore, Betagen Otic should not be used in pregnant or lactating animals. If overgrowth of nonsusceptible bacteria, fungi or yeasts occur, or if hypersensitivity develops, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.
