It is also used in cats with an enlarged heart with thickened walls, including heart disease caused by an overactive thyroid gland. This product is not licensed for use in animals, however there is no equivalent drug available for use in animals currently. Product ContainsAtenolol Dosage and AdministrationThe dosage varies depending on the use. Use as directed by your veterinarian. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsAtenolol is contra-indicated in animals which are allergic to this type of drug. It is also contra-indicated in animals with overt heart failure, or those with a slow heart rate. It should be used with caution in animals with kidney disease, lung disease and diabetes (with unstable blood sugar levels). It may mask the signs of an overactive thyroid in cats, but may also be used to treat the signs of this disease. Adverse effects seen with this medication include: very slow heartrate, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, airway constriction, fainting, diarrhea and lethargy.
