Theophylline

It is used in pets with heart failure, asthma and fluid on the lungs. Theophylline also has a diuretic effect, increases the pumping of the heart muscle and relaxes the uterus. This product is not licensed for use in animals, however there is no equivalent drug available for use in animals as at June 2006. Product ContainsTheophylline Dosage and AdministrationThe dosage varies depending on the use. This drug has a narrow safety margin, so use only as directed by your veterinarian. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsThis drug is contra-indicated in animals which are allergic to any of the xanthines, such as caffeine or theobromine. This drug has a narrow safety margin and must be carefully dosed. Side effects of overdosing may include: abnormal heart rhythms, nervous stimulation (including seizures), gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increased eating, drinking and urinating. Theophylline should be used with caution in pets with severe heart disease, stomach ulcers, an overactive thyroid gland, kidney or liver disease, elevated blood pressure Theophylline may interact with many drugs, so should be used carefully in conjunction with other medications, including phenobarbital, phenytoin, cimetidine, erythromycin, allopurinol, clindamycin, lincomycin, enrofloxacin, halothane, ketamine, or other drugs with actions on the sympathetic nervous system.
