Product Uses

The combination of ingredients in Panolog provides comprehensive therapy against those organisms responsible for most superficial bacterial infections. The ointment is particularly useful in the treatment of acute and chronic ear infections, in interdigital cysts in cats and dogs, and in anal gland infections in dogs. The preparation is also indicated in the management of skin disorders with inflammation and moist or dry dermatitis, particularly in association with bacterial or fungal (Candida albicans) infections. It is also of value in eczema; contact dermatitis and seborrheic dermatitis; and as an adjunct in the treatment of skin disease due to parasitic infestation.

Product Contains

Nystatin, Neomycin Sulfate, Thiostrepton, Triamcinolone acetonide

Dosage and Administration

Shake well before using. Frequency of administration is dependent on the severity of the condition. For mild skin or ear disease, application may range from once daily to once a week; for severe conditions, the ointment may be applied as often as two to three times daily, if necessary. Frequency of treatment may be decreased as improvement occurs. Wear gloves during the administration of the ointment or wash hands immediately after application.
In ear disease: Clean the ear canal of wax and remove any foreign bodies, then instill three to five drops of Panolog ointment. Preliminary use of a local anesthetic may be advisable where the ear is very painful.
Infected anal glands, cystic areas, etc.: Drain gland or cyst and then fill with Panolog ointment.
Other skin disorders: Clean affected areas and apply Panolog ointment sparingly in a thin film.

Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions

Panolog is not intended for the treatment of deep abscesses, deep-seated infections, puncture wounds or serious burns. Skin reactions attributable to its use have been extremely rare. The occurrence of systemic reactions is rarely a problem with topical administration.

Adverse events reported in dogs in association with this product include excessive drinking and urination, vomiting and diarrhea (occasionally bloody).

There is some evidence that corticosteroids (such as triamcinolone) can be absorbed after topical application and cause systemic effects. Cushing’s syndrome has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated corticosteroid therapy in dogs. Inhibition of the body’s own steroid production following withdrawal of the drug may occur. Corticosteroids may induce the first stage of the birth process if used during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature labor, which may be associated with complications. Additionally, corticosteroids administered to dogs, rabbits and rodents during pregnancy have resulted in birth defects in the young.

If hypersensitivity to any of the components occurs, discontinue treatment and contact your veterinarian.

Temporary hearing loss has been reported in conjunction with treatment of ear infections with products containing corticosteroids or some antibacterials. This medication should only be instilled into an ear with an intact ear drum to avoid the possibility of transmitting infection to the middle ear as well as damaging the delicate hearing and balance apparatus from prolonged contact. If hearing or balance problems are noted during the course of treatment, discontinue use.
