Dosage and Administration

Slentrol should be prescribed as part of an overall weight management program that incorporates a complete and balanced canine diet, limited to the dog's daily requirements and physical activity.

During the 14 days of therapy, dosage of Slentrol is 0.01 mL/kg (0.0045 mL/lb) body weight, administered once daily. From days 15 to 28 of treatment, the dosage of Slentrol is 0.02 mL/kg (0.009 mL/lb) of body weight. In subsequent months of therapy, the recommended dosing regimen varies for each individual dog based on the percent of bodyweight lost the previous month and the new bodyweight. Your vet will weigh your dog and calculate the appropriate dose each month. The dose should not exceed a maximum daily dose of 0.2 mL/kg (0.09 mL/lb), based on the dog's current body weight, during any part of treatment.

To administer the medication, insert the supplied oral dosing syringe through the membrane into the bottle, invert the bottle and withdraw the appropriate volume (using the graduation marks on the side of the oral dosing syringe), then administer the liquid directly into the dog's mouth or on a small amount of food. Slentrol may be given with or without food. Wipe the syringe clean after each use with a clean dry cloth or disposable towel. Do not clean the syringe with water, or mix water with Slentrol.

Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions

Slentrol should not be used in cats as it increases the risk of producing liver damage during weight loss in obese cats. Slentrol is not recommended for use in dogs currently receiving long-term corticosteroid therapy. Do not use in dogs with liver disease.

Safety in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs has not been established. Slentrol has not been evaluated in dogs less than 1 year of age. Use with caution in any growing dogs. The safety of Slentrol in dogs has not been evaluated beyond a length of treatment of 1 year.

Almost 25% of dogs dosed with Slentrol have experienced occasional episodes of vomiting and diarrhea. In most cases these episodes lasted for one or two days. Vomiting occurs most often during the first month of treatment or within a week of a dose increase. If vomiting does occur it is recommended to continue dosing at the same dose volume, however, the time of day or method of administration (with or without food) may be changed. If vomiting is severe or lasts longer than 2 days, consult your veterinarian and have your dog evaluated. Likewise, although Slentrol will reduce a dog's appetite, if total inappetence or anorexia is observed for more than one day, this signs should be reported to your veterinarian.

Additional adverse events occasionally noted in treated animals include: lethargy, constipation and dehydration, increased drinking and urination, unsteady gait, ulceration of the eye, seizures and liver disease or an increase in liver enzyme levels.

Slentrol has been safely used in conjunction with other commonly used veterinary products such as vaccines, anthelmintics, antiparasitics, antimicrobials, collars, shampoos, dips, short-acting oral steroid preparations, and otic, ophthalmic, and topical steroid preparations. Slentrol has not been tested concomitantly with long-acting steroid products, anabolic steroids, or other products known to affect appetite.

Not for use in humans. Keep this and all drugs out of reach of children. Adverse reactions associated with humans ingesting dirlotapide include: abdominal pain and distention, diarrhea, flatulence, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Slentrol may cause eye-irritation. If accidental eye exposure occurs, flush the eyes immediately with clean water.
