Cyclosporine should be used with caution concurrently with medications which affect the metabolism of the drug in the liver (e.g ketoconazole, erythromycin, metoclopramide, verapamil) as this may lead to increased plasma levels of cyclosporine and an increased risk of toxic effects. Cyclosporin may increase the levels of digoxin in the blood, if given concurrently, and may lead to toxicity of this medication. The safety and effectiveness of cyclosporine has not been established in dogs less than 6 months of age or less than 4 lbs body weight. It is not for use in breeding dogs, pregnant or lactating females. There have been reports of convulsions in human patients receiving cyclosporine, particularly in combination with a high dose of methylprednisolone (a corticosteriod). Killed vaccines are recommended for dogs receiving any immunosuppressant medication because the impact of the drug on the immune response to modified live vaccines is unknown. Diarrhea, vomiting, ear infections, urinary tract infections, anorexia, gum overgrowth, enlarged lymph nodes, depression, excessive drinking and urinating, soft stools, seizures, itching, red skin, nausea, regurgitation, constipation and flatulence have been seen in association with cyclosporine therapy.
