It is used in animals to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, as well as rickettsial and mycoplasmal diseases. This product is not licensed for use in animals, however there is no equivalent drug available for use in animals as at June 2006. Product ContainsDoxycycline Dosage and AdministrationThe dose varies depending on the infection being treated. Doxycycline should be given in conjunction with or immediately following feeding. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsAllergic reactions to this drug have been seen. Doxycycline should not be used if the patient has a history of allergies to this medication. The most commonly reported side effects are vomiting and diarrhea, especially in cats. Dosing with food helps to reduce this. Antacids and mineral supplements can reduce the absorption of this medication, so these should be dosed at least 1-2 hours apart. The administration of tetracyclines in newborn animals may lead to permanent yellow staining of teeth. Avoid using doxycycline in pregnant animals in the last three weeks of pregnancy and in newborn animals during the first month of life. Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms may occur with this antibiotic, as with others. If the animal is not responding to therapy, consult your veterinarian.
