This product is not licensed for use in animals, however there is no equivalent drug available for use in animals currently. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsThis medication should not be used in animals with a history of allergies to sulfasalazine itself, sulphonamide antibiotics or aspirin-type drugs. It is contraindicated in animals with blockages of the gut or urinary tract. It should be used with caution in animals with liver and renal diseases or blood abnormalities. This medication has been associated with the development of dry eye in dogs, as well as vomiting, liver damage and reduced immune function. Anorexia and vomiting are the most commonly seen side effects in cats. Sulfasalazine should be used with caution in conjunction with other sulfonamide antibiotics, or with highly protein bound drugs as the effect of either may be increased significantly.
