Insert the tip of the tube beneath the lower lid and express a small quantity of the ointment into the conjunctival sac in dogs and cats. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsOphthalmic preparations containing corticosteroids (such as hydrocortisone) are contraindicated in the treatment of those deep, ulcerative lesions of the cornea, in fungal or viral infections. There is some evidence that corticosteroids can be absorbed after topical application and cause systemic effects. Liver damage, vomiting and diarrhea (occasionally bloody) may be seen in dogs treated with these drugs. Cushing's syndrome has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated corticosteroid therapy in dogs. Inhibition of the body's own steroid production following withdrawal of the drug may occur. Corticosteroids may induce the first stage of the birth process if used during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature labor, which may be associated with complications. Additionally, corticosteroids administered to dogs, rabbits and rodents during pregnancy have resulted in birth defects in the young. Therefore, Neobacimyx-H should not be used in pregnant or lactating animals. If overgrowth of nonsusceptible bacteria, fungi or yeasts occur, or if hypersensitivity develops, treatment should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted. Sensitivity to this ophthalmic ointment is rare, however, itching, burning, or inflammation have been seen in sensitive animals. If reactions occur, discontinue use of the preparation.
