Product Uses

Mometamax is indicated for the treatment of canine acute and chronic otitis externa associated with yeast (specifically Malassezia pachdermatis) and/or susceptible bacteria. It is a combination treatment for outer ear infections containing a corticosteroid, a broad-spectrum antibacterial and an antifungal to treat infections and reduce the inflammation of the ear. The plasticized hydrocarbon mineral oil base ensures the product coats the surface of the ear and assists in the breakdown of ear wax.

Dosage and Administration

Ensure the outer ear is clean and dry and that all excess hair has been clipped. Shake the Mometamax well before use. Instill 4 drops (or 2 drops from the 215g bottle) of Mometamax twice daily into the ear canal(s) of dogs weighing less than 30lbs (15kg) and 8 drops (or 4 drops from the 215g bottle) once day for dogs weighing 30lbs (15kg) or more. Massage the external ear carefully after instillation to ensure appropriate distribution of medication. Therapy should continue for 7 consecutive days.

Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions

Mometamax should not be used in dogs with perforated ear drums, nor in conjunction with any other medications known to cause ototoxicity. If any adverse effect are noticed, such as hearing or balance problems, discontinue the medication and consult your veterinarian for appropriate therapy.

Skin reactions are rare in association with Mometamax use, however sensitivity has been recorded. If redness, irritation, or swelling of the treated area persists or increases, discontinue use of the product and contact your veterinarian.

There is some evidence that corticosteroids (such as mometasone) can be absorbed after topical application and cause systemic effects. Cushing's syndrome has been reported in association with prolonged or repeated corticosteroid therapy in dogs. Inhibition of the body's own steroid production following withdrawal of the drug may occur. Corticosteroids may induce the first stage of the birth process if used during the last trimester of pregnancy and may precipitate premature labor, which may be associated with complications. Additionally, corticosteroids administered to dogs, rabbits and rodents during pregnancy have resulted in birth defects in the young. Therefore, Mometamax should not be used in pregnant or lactating animals.
