Selegiline (generic Anipril)
View other items in the same category as Selegiline (generic Anipril) Product UsesThis is a human medication which is sometimes used in animals for the control of clinical signs associated with canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) and control of clinical signs associated with uncomplicated canine pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH).This product is not licensed for use in animals, however it is similar to a medication which is licensed in dogs. Product Containsselegiline HCl (L-deprenyl HCl) Dosage and AdministrationThe recommended dosage for the animal medication for the control of clinical signs associated with CDS is 0.5-1.0 mg/kg once daily, preferably administered in the morning. Adjustments should be made based on response and tolerance to the drug. The recommended dosage for the control of clinical signs associated with canine PDH is 1.0 mg/kg once daily, preferably administered in the morning. If no improvement is observed after 2 months of therapy, dosage may be increased to a maximum of 2.0 mg/kg once daily. If no improvement is seen after one month of medication at the higher dose or if clinical signs progress, the dog should be re-evaluated. If clinical signs of PDH continue to progress despite selegiline therapy, in the absence of concurrent disease, alternative therapy should be considered. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsSelegiline is not recommended for treatment of patients with hyperadrenocorticism not of pituitary origin such as those due to an adrenal tumor or administration of glucocorticoids. If complications of PDH are evident at the time of diagnosis or emerge during Selegiline therapy, the patient should be evaluated and alternative therapy considered. Concurrent use of selegiline in conjunction with other therapies of canine PDH has not been reported. Selegiline is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to this drug. The safety of selegiline in breeding, pregnant and lactating bitches, and breeding dogs has not been determined. The combination of selegiline with anti-depressant medications, opiates, alpha-2 agonists and MAO inhibitors, such as amitraz should be avoided. In clinical trials with selegiline in dogs, the following effects were seen in a small proportion of treated animals: restlessness/agitation, vomiting, disorientation, diarrhea, diminished hearing, weakness, confusion, incoordination and “seizure-like - activity, destructive behavior, anorexia, anemia, stiffness, excessive drinking, hyperactivity, irritability, abnormal repetitive movements, anxiousness, staggering, disorientation, seizures, collapse, heart problems, breathing difficulties and sneezing. Overdoses of the medication were associated with signs including: salivation, decreased pupil response, and decreased body weight, panting, dehydration and weaving.
