Product Uses

Allopurinol is a human drug used to treat gout. It has been used in birds for this purpose also. In dogs and cats, it is used to reduce uric acid levels, therefore preventing the formation of urate crystals in the bladder. It has also been used as an alternative treatment for Leishmaniasis and Trypanosomiasis in dogs. This product is not licensed for use in animals, however there is no equivalent drug available for use in animals currently.

The dosage varies depending on the use. Use as directed by your veterinarian.

Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions

Do not use allopurinol if a pet has had a previous allergic reaction to it. This drug should be used with caution in pets with liver or kidney disease. Potential side effects of this medication include digestive upsets, kidney or liver damage. There are many drugs which can interact with allopurinol, including cyclophosphamide, urinary acidifiers, azathioprine, probenecid, mercaptopurine, diuretics, trimethoprim-sulphonamide antibiotics, oral anticoagulants, aminophylline and theophylline, so the patient should be carefully monitored when this drug is being used with other medications.

Store at a controlled room temperature between 59-86°F (15-30°C).
