Product Uses
Thyro-tabs are indicated for use in dogs for correction of conditions associated with low circulating thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism).
Most hypothyroid dogs will require life-long supplemental thyroid hormone replacement therapy to maintain normal metabolism, as their thyroid gland is unable to produce sufficient hormone for the body's requirements.
Product Contains
Levothyroxine sodium tablets, USP
Dosage and Administration
The initial recommended daily dose is 0.1 to 0.2 mg/10 lb (4.5 kg) body weight in single or divided doses. Dosage can then be adjusted by monitoring thyroid hormone blood levels every four weeks until an adequate maintenance dose is established. The usual daily maintenance dose is 0.1 mg/10 lb (4.5 kg). 0.8 to 1.0 mg total daily dose will be sufficient in most dogs over 80 pounds in body weight.
Thyro-Tabs Caplet may be administered orally or placed in the food.
Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions
The clinical effects of levothyroxine sodium therapy are slow in being manifested. Overdosage of any thyroid drug may produce the signs and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis including, excessive drinking, eating and urinating, reduced heat tolerance and hyperactivity or personality changes.
Thyro-tabs are contraindicated in thyrotoxicosis, heart attack and uncorrected adrenal insufficiency (Addison's Disease). Thyro-tabs should be used with caution in dogs with elevated blood pressure or normal thyroid hormone production.
The administration of levothyroxine sodium to dogs to be used for breeding purposes or in pregnant females has not been evaluated. There is evidence to suggest that administration to pregnant animals may in some instances affect the normal development of the thyroid gland in the unborn pups.
An ingredient (tartrazine) in Thyro-tabs has been associated with allergic-type reactions (including bronchial asthma) in susceptible humans. It is unknown whether such reactions could occur in other animals.
