(KCS) and chronic superficial keratitis or ?pannus? (CSK) in dogs. For best results in treating KCS, cyclosporine ophthalmic ointment should be administered early in the course of the disease before irreversible damage to the tear gland tissue, or corneal scarring or pigmentation occurs. In most cases of chronic KCS, long-term (lifelong) consistent therapy with Optimmune will be required, however periodic reassessment as to the need for Optimmune therapy is recommended. For CSK, environmental factors such as the level of ultraviolet (UV) radiation are implicated in the disease. The signs of disease may subside in the winter months or if the dog is moved to a lower altitude or kept indoors, so exposed to less UV radiation. Treatment should be adjusted accordingly Product Contains0.2% Cyclosporine Dosage and AdministrationPrior to application of Optimmune, debris should be removed from the eye with a suitable nonirritating solution. A 1/4 inch strip of ointment should be applied to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours. The ointment may be placed directly on the cornea or into the conjunctival sac. When switching to cyclosporine from another therapeutic agent, clinical efficacy is not necessarily apparent immediately after initiation of Optimmune therapy. Several days to a few weeks may be required before the clinical effects are of Optimmune are of sufficient magnitude to control the disease. When switching to cyclosporine from another therapeutic agent, it may be necessary to wait some time before withdrawing the previous therapy as abruptly stopping this treatment immediately upon initiation of Optimmune may result in a transient clinical relapse. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsThe safety of Optimmune has not been determined in cases of preexisting viral or fungal ocular infections ?use of the product should be delayed until the fungal/viral ocular infection has been successfully treated. The safety of Optimmune in puppies, pregnant females, or dogs used for breeding has not been determined. On rare occasions, Optimmune use may be associated with local irritation such as redness around the eye, eyelid spasm, and excessive rubbing. Inflammation is common in the eyes of dogs with KCS, so it may be difficult to determine whether this local irritation constitutes a hypersensitivity to Optimmune or due to the underlying disease. If irritation persists beyond 7 days, hypersensitivity to a component of Optimmune should be suspected and therapeutic options reassessed. In cases refractory to cyclosporine, the diagnosis should be re-evaluated and a different course of therapy considered. StorageStore between 2° and 30°C (36° and 86°F).
