View other items in the same category as Methimazole (generic Tapazole) 10 mg (per tablet) Product UsesMethimazole is a human drug which inhibits the synthesis of thyroid hormones by interfering with metabolic steps involving iodine incorporation in the thyroid gland. Methimazole has no effect on pre-existing circulating or stored thyroid hormones or supplemented thyroid hormones. This drug is used in humans to treat hyperthyroidism, and is is commonly employed by veterinarians to treat this disease in cats, however this product is not licensed for use in animals. There are no products using this ingredient which are FDA approved for use in cats currently. Product ContainsMethimazole Dosage and AdministrationThe usual dose is 1 tablet every 8-12 hours. Blood tests are be done to check proper dosage. The drug is very bitter and is better tolerated by pets when given with food. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsTransient GI disturbances including anorexia, vomiting and depression commonly occur, but most resolve relatively quickly. Approximately 15 of cats develop transient disturbances of white blood cells, and up to 50 may develop auto-antibodies following 6 months or more of treatment, and may require a dose reduction. Rarely, cats have been known to self mutilate their face and neck through scratching within the first few weeks of treatment and have required discontinuation of therapy. Very rarely, bleeding disorders, liver damage and myasthenia gravis have been recorded in association with therapy, also requiring discontinuation. Methimazole should be used with caution and with extra monitoring in cats with liver disease, autoimmune disease or pre-existing blood abnormalities. Methimazole readily crosses the placenta and is excreted in milk, therefore kittens from queens receiving this drug may be hypothyroid and should go on milk replacement after receiving colostrum from the mother''s milk. Should any signs of intolerance of methimazole occur in your pet, discontinue therapy and contact your veterinarian for advice.
