Product Uses

Lysodren contains mitotane, an active ingredient which selectively destroys certain regions of the adrenal gland, where cortisol is produced by the body it can be used to treat cancers of the adrenal gland, or reduce the excessive production of cortsol. This is a human medication, is commonly employed by veterinarians to treat Cushing's Disease (hyperadrenocorticism) in dogs. This product is not licensed for use in animals, however there are no medications containing this ingredient which are registered for use in animals currently.

Dosage and Administration

Therapy with this medication is often long-term and animals should be closely monitored while receiving this drug. Induction therapy when the drug is commenced for Cushing's disease where the abnormality causing excess cortisol is the result of an overactive pituatary gland overstimulating the adrenal gland - is normally at a dose of 12.5 mg/lb twice daily for 7-8 days. Maintenance therapy with the drug long-term for this disease is 12.5 mg/lb per week, normally in 2-3 doses. If the abnormality is an adrenal tumor, a higher dose is normally used: 25-35 mg/lb daily for 10-14 days.

Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions

The use of this drug can lead to hypoadrenocorticism or Addison's disease. The use of this drug may interact with other medications such as insulin, barbiturates or spironolactone. Mitotane may reduce the daily insulin requirements in diabetic dogs, so their blood sugar should be monitored closely when mitotane therapy is commenced. Side effects which have been reported in dogs in association with mitotane include: a reduced appetite, vomiting, depression, listlessness, diarrhea and weakness.

Should any signs of intolerance of mitotane occur in your pet, discontinue therapy and contact your veterinarian for advice.

Store at a controlled room temperature between 59-86°F (15-30°C).
