Product Uses
Enacard is indicated for the treatment of dogs in heart failure due to the incomplete closing of heart valves (mitral valve regurgitation) and/or reduced contractility of the heart (dilated cardiomyopathy) in conjunction with other therapies. Enacard acts to improve the clinical signs associated with heart failure rather than to repair the damage to the heart, by reducing the accumulation of excess fluid. It is indicated for use in mild, moderate, or severe heart failure.
Product Contains
enalapril maleate
Dosage and Administration
The recommended starting dose of Enacard in dogs is 0.5 mg/kg administered orally once daily with or without food. If an adequate response is not seen within 2 weeks, the dosing frequency may be increased to twice daily for a total daily dose of 1 mg/kg. This dose increase may be initiated earlier if indicated by worsening signs of heart failure are seen.
Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions
Dogs should be observed closely for 48 hours following initial dosing or after increasing the dosing frequency for signs of decreased blood pressure, such as weakness or depression. In addition, kidney function should be monitored closely before and for the first week after starting treatment with Enacard, particularly when it is used in conjunction with a diuretic, as this combination may lead to kidney compromise due to a decrease in kidney blood flow. If signs of low blood pressure or kidney compromise occur, consult your veterinarian.
Enacard may be used concomitantly with other therapies for the treatment of heart failure in dogs, including furosemide, digoxin, antiarrhythmics, beta-blockers, bronchodilators, cough suppressants and sodium-restricted diets for the treatment of heart failure in dogs, however the safety when used concomitantly with other cardiovascular drugs (e.g., vasodilators) has not been established.
The safety of enalapril in breeding dogs has not been established and the use of enalapril in pregnant females is not recommended.
In case of ingestion by humans, contact a physician immediately.
Adverse reactions seen with Enacard may attributable to co-treatment with diuretics and digoxin and to the disease process itself. Those most commonly seen include: excessive drinking and urination, depression, lethargy, anorexia, decreased activity, diarrhea and vomiting.
