Product Uses
Rimadyl is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) indicated for use in dogs for the relief of pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. It is also used in the treatment of post-operative pain associated with soft tissue and orthopedic surgical procedures.
Product Contains
Carprofen
Dosage and Administration
2mg/lb (4.4mg/kg) daily in single or divided doses. For post-operative pain, the chewable tablet should be given approximately two hours before the procedure.
Warnings, Side Effects and Drug Interactions
Rimadyl is generally well tolerated by dogs after oral administration, however it should not be used in dogs with a previous allergic reaction to carprofen. As a class, NSAIDs can be associated with kidney and gastrointestinal toxicity. The most commonly reported reactions are vomiting and diarrhea, occasionally bloody. Additional adverse reactions seen include: decreased appetite, increased water consumption, increased urination, anemia, jaundice (liver damage), lethargy, incoordination, seizures, or behavioral changes. In rare situations, death has been reported. Approximately one quarter of the reports of liver damage have been in Labrador Retrievers. Rimadyl should not be given with any drugs which could exacerbate toxicity, such as corticosteroids or other NSAIDs or any drugs known to be toxic to kidneys. Rimadyl is not recommended for use in dogs with bleeding disorders. The safety of Rimadyl in dogs less than 6 weeks of age, in pregnant or lactating animals or those used for breeding has not been established. Care should be taken if administering with other drugs which are highly protein bound or metabolized through the liver, as this may increase the availability of the drug and cause adverse effects. Should any adverse effects be noted during treatment, Rimadyl should be discontinued and a veterinarian contacted for assistance.
Storage
Rimadyl chewables should be stored at controlled room temperature, 59-86°F (15-30°C), out of reach of dogs, in a secure area, due to the palatable nature of the medication.
