Product UsesProin tablets are a supplemental product to treat urinary incontinence in dogs. Largely, the dogs which suffer from this problem are desexed females. Phenylpropanolamine works on the nervous system, by tightening the internal bladder sphincter muscle to prevent accidental leakage of urine. Product ContainsPhenylpropanolamine HCl Dosage and AdministrationDose 1-2 mg/kg (0.4-0.8 mg/lb) by mouth every 12 hours or as instructed by your veterinarian. The tablets are liver flavored and most dogs will accept them as a treat. Give tablets late in the evening to avoid accidents, which are more likely to occur when the dog relaxes to sleep at night. It may take several doses before the full effect of the drug is seen. Warnings, Side Effects and Drug InteractionsPhenylpropanolamine acts on the nervous system, so other effects related to nervous stimulation may occur, such as blood vessel constriction, raising blood pressure, elevated heart rate, restlessness and excitability, reduced appetite. Phenylpropanolamine should not be given to dogs with glaucoma, an enlarged prostate gland, overactive thyroid gland, diabetes mellitus, heart disorders or high blood pressure. There are certain medications which should not be used in conjunction with phenylpropanolamine: ephedrine, epinephrine, monoamine oxidase inhibitors. It should be used with caution in conjunction with NSAIDs and tricyclic antidepressants as this combination may raise the animal's blood pressure. The drug should be used with caution with digoxin as Proin may increase the likelihood of arrythmias of the heart. Proin is not recommended for use in pregnant or lactating animals.
