FREDERICK, Maryland: Your pet cat may not love you as much as you think.
A genetic study on the origins of the domestic cat published in the journal Science suggests that today's household tabbies actually 'domesticated' themselves. According to the Washington Post, the findings of the said study suggest that the ancestors of today's felines wandered into Near Eastern settlements around the time humans began agriculture, in search of food, not friendship or human companionship.
Oxford University doctoral fellow and study lead author Carlos Driscoll told Forbes: "Cats weren't domesticated on purpose, they just kind of invited themselves in." Driscoll, together with an international team of researchers, compared genetic information from 1000 domesticated cats around the world via a new process called genomic archeology.
"Our study was able to localize it down to one subspecies whose range included the Near East," Driscoll told the Chicago Tribune. This animal is called lybica. The study showed that felines first became domesticated soon after humans started farming, somewhere in the Middle East. Researchers believe feline domestication began somewhere near the 'Fertile Crescent' (what we now know as Iraq).
As large-scale grain agriculture began to flourish about 12,000 years ago, humans had to contend with the problem of mice infesting surplus grain . Not only did the mice eat the grain, they also spread disease. This was the mutually benefical opportunity that wild cats were waiting for. While farming communities needed to get rid of the rodents infesting their barns and granaries, wild cats needed a regular supply of food and shelter. Thus began a "mutual relationship" between cats and humans.
Melinda Zeder, zooarchaeologist from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, described so-called feline domestication to the Tribune: "..domestication needs to be looked at as a mutualistic relationship. The cats may have had the upper hand in this relationship in the beginning and retained it to this day."
A feline history:
- 50 million years ago: Some scientists believe that cats evolved from a genus of weasellike animals called Miacis.
- 40 million years ago: Earliest form of catlike creature appears.
- 9,500 years ago: Cat and human remains are buried together in Cyprus, the earliest evidence of domestication.
- 3500 B.C.: Egyptians tame a wildcat, which researchers thought previously was the earliest evidence of domestication.
- 1500 B.C.: Egyptians begin to consider cats sacred.
- 1000 B.C.: Greek and Phoenician traders are believed to have brought domestic cats to Europe and the Middle East.
- c.500-c.1450: In the Middle Ages, Europeans came to consider cats a symbol of evil.
- 1800s: As European settlers head west, they bring along the ancestors of most cats in the U.S. and Canada today.

Over the years, natural selection favored animals which tolerated human contact - including cats. This advantage put the your pet cat's wild ancestor in a better position to survive than other feline relatives.
Today, humans own felines more for their pet and companionship qualities than their pest-extermination abilities. However, according to this new study, cats may not have evolved as much as we'd expect. Even today, cats see their owners not as a companion but more so as a provider. The results of this study could perhaps explain why (unlike canines who are extremely loyal and affectionate), cats tend to seem more... well, aloof.
One example that cat owners will relate to is when a cat suddenly hisses or tries to scratch or bite during a seemingly-harmless petting or stroking session. According to hdw-inc.com, this behavior is just a feline's way of expressing that he/she has had enough petting and stroking from the owner. In other words, it's the cat's way of saying, "That's enough. I don't need anymore petting from you." Ouch.
Cat lovers the world over may find the results of this study a little surprising. Are thousands of years of cat-human interaction just a ploy for feline survival? Maybe. However, domesticated cats and cat owners all over the world have proven that there's more to the cat-human relationship than just the need for companionship and survival. Remember Sylvester, the part-Persian stray who saved her owner?
And in their own feisty and furry ways, cats have also developed their own method of expressing affection to humans, like a simple rub of the head against your body which means that he's "marking" you as his property. Now, how's that for sweet?
Your cats may not love you as much as you might have thought, but rest assured, they still love you.
Good thing Ive got a pet dog. lol.. cats can be demanding and pretty mean at times. hooray for the dogs!
no big surprise here.. lol.. my balinese is guilty of being THE boss. now i know why, tnx petshed. lol!
they just invited themselves in? yup, sure sounds like cats alright!
although this may be true, i'm perfectly happy with my lovable tabby cat!
hey seth. cats really arent all mean. some are nice and obedient like my tabby. and besides its not being mean, its survival instinct you know..
i can actually relate to the story. my cats are like that as well. somehow its also my fault. i spoil them and now whenever they want something, i cant say no to them.
i know my cats love me. i was even urine marked! gross! but hey, i know it's their way of saying, "you're MY human and nobody can come near you but me."
i know my cat is the boss of me! lol! One demanding MEOW and i'm there rushing to feed her or give her whatever she wants! lol
i can totally relate to this story! cats may be aloof, but it's so rewarding to earn their love and affection!
I totally agree with the guys here. It is so rewarding to gain the trust and love of a cat. Taming a cat poses a bit of a challenge not like dogs who would wag their tail or slobber at any stranger willing to give them a treat or two.
strange how the cat's origins didn't seem to take it to egypt. coz that's where the bigger granaries started being in fashion, right? plus, cats in egypt had significant roles in society and in the afterlife. i just thought the article could have mentioned it some.
Oh i don't care what you people say. My maxine loves me and I know that for sure
cats have always been very good in getting what they want. they know exactly which buttons to push. now its proven that they really are quite intelligent! imagine, domesticating themselves just to get what they want and need! in any case, my cats are still my babies. i guess they have already brainwashed me in following their every whim.
Hey! dogs dont just slobber at any stranger! thats why their used as guardians of homes! your cats wont do a thing even if a robber comes in the house. cats just purr.
cats dont just purr! they have claws that can attack people they dont know. cats are protective of whats theirs including their owners...
LOL could it be possible that kitty-cats are part of some deep-rooted alien conspiracy to rule the world? :)
i think da study didnt mean to have cat lovers and dog owners fight so chill you guys. cats are cool, dogs are too.
cynthia: it's not so cute when they 'mark' you and your stuff- one time, my tabby decided that my PC was his territory. he gave it a generous spray right into the motherboard =(
As they always say... dogs have owners, cats have STAFF. lol
well cats really do have their bossy nature but i can say that i prefer them than dogs. i have three cats that i really adore and i wouldn't know what i would do if i suddenly lose them.
cats are the most sweet, caring and loyal pets that you can ever find. i should know. i've had my cats for as long as i can remember and i have never had any problems.
then mybe you really know how to feed your tabby coz it hasnt gone looking for a new owner. lol!
Cats were considered higher beings in the past. Amazing how that quality still remains. cat owners can easily relate that they succumb to the demands of their cats. cats really have a way of getting everything goin their way.
Cat owners just really know how demanding cats can get. and when I say demanding, i really mean DEMANDING! lol!
