An iPhone for your pet

CUPERTINO, California: People across America are doing everything they can to get their hands on Apple's newest baby, the iPhone.

Since this most-talked-about telecomunications gizmo was unveiled last January, the hype has skyrocketed about the new iPhone. According to Apple, it is THE phone of all mobile phones. But what do pet owners think?

The iPhone is a wide screen iPod, a pocket PC with breakthrough online capabilities, plus a revolutionary mobile phone all controlled by the touch of a finger.

But this isn't just another vanilla iPhone review. While it maybe the most drool-worthy tech gadget out there, to pet lovers it still isn't perfect. Clearly, there is still room for improvement in pet-related iPhone peripherals.

What if the iPhone came with a pet-specific add-on - let's call it the iPhoneCollar - for direct communication with your pet dog or cat? The iPhoneCollar would be an amazing iPhone accessory for pet lovers, sitting safely and snugly around their pet's neck and allowing the owner to care for their pet even when they were at work or on holiday.

Here are some iPhoneCollar features a pet-loving iPhone owner would love to see on their new cell phone:

1. Paw-Tracking Device
The iPhone already boasts a built-in Google Maps application that quickly locates streets, addresses and prime locations or landmarks. With GPS being the answer for people with no sense of direction, it would be great if the iPhoneCollar could send signals to your iPhone. You would know day or night where your beloved furry friend is whenever you are out of the house, and where he is if you can't find him!

2. Anti-separation anxiety soother
The iPhoneCollar could act as a direct link between you and your beloved pet. The PetCell collar (available on the market right now) already allows you call your pet at any time. Your iPhoneCollar would let you do that and a whole lot more. You should be able to call and talk to your pet (via a small speaker in the iPhoneCollar) anytime to save them (or you!) from separation anxiety. Your dog or cat would be able to hear your voice anytime of day. You can even tell them to behave, be a good kitty or doggy, eat, anything!

3. Virtual pat/Vibra-Massage
Everybody needs a good rub-down. People, horses, cats, dogs all love a nice massage. With the vibra-massage function, you can give your pet a good rub down even while you are away. The iPhoneCollar should have different vibrating modes to calm your pet's nerves. If you just feel like brightening your pet's day, give it a virtual pat - a special key on the iPhone gives your dog or cat a 'scratch' behind the neck - just enough to get them by until your get home.

4. Intruder alert
Home security no matter where you are. The iPhoneCollar should contain a proximity sensor which detects unauthorised entry onto your property or into your house. While you dog keeps the intruder at bay, the iPhoneCollar sends a signal to your iPhone, prompting you to call the police!

5. Pet food delivery
The iPhoneCollar could be programmed to keep track of the amount of pet food left for your dog or cat. Once a certain minimum level is reached, the iPhoneCollar could send a message or an alarm to a preselected pet food retailer for another order. Once the food has been delivered, an SMS message will be sent to your iPhone, prompting you to pay the bill online.

6. Pet playdates
The iPhoneCollar should be able to sense other pooches or felines with iPhoneCollars in close proximity. These collars should automatically locate and call other pet owners within your area and arrange compatible play dates for your furry friends.

7. Goodbye winter!
Use your iPhoneCollar to save on electricity costs when you are not home. Leave your household heater turned off during those cold winter days. The iCollar contains an infrared-enabled battery-powered heating device that spreads lovely warmth from your pet's head to it's feet. By using your iPhone you can adjust the iPhoneCollar's temperature during the day, or when it cools down at night

8. Holographic playmate
Your lonely dog or cat is bored with all its toys, but you aren't home or are too busy to play with it. With the iPhoneCollar holographic playmate, your pet will never be bored again! The holographic dog or cat beams out from a special iPhoneCollar lense , with realistic canine or feline sounds broadcast via the integral iPhoneCollar speaker! Use your iPhone to choose from a selection of pre-programmed potential playmates, or design your own virtual playmates on the spot!

9. Your idea here!

lemme see.. i think i'd like for the iPhone to act as massager too. you know, it vibrates on a touch of the finger so my labrador can get instant massage whenever he feels like it.ha! beat that! lol!

LOL it would be awesome if pets could have their own iPhone! how about a poop spray! Haha! reminds me of that old Ben Stiller movie where they sell Va-POO-rize!

Haha before I get my dog an iPhone, i suppose I'd like to get one for myself first!

Toby Geller's picture

Whoa! This is crazy! It just goes to show how crazy people can get with their pets! Just imagine, an iCollar specially designed for your dog! If this were only real, I'll probably get one just to see if it really works although I hope its not as expensive as the iPhone.

LOL it's hard enough to get an i-phone as it is!

Hmmmm... what if the iPhoneCollar comes with a Pheromone spray? I mean, cat's get stressed on several occasions like travelling, doctor visits. Pheromone spray would surely calm them down. A simple press of a button, and the collar emits a certain scent that relaxes the cat. I'm sure my cute cuddly kitty would love it!

Va-POO-rize! nice one! That would be a great feature. I think it would be great to have a universal remote control and a bottle opener too. For when you're watching superbowl and you're just too lazy to stand up -- you can just say "here boy!" problem solved.

Don't you think an iPhone for dogs is a bit too much?

YO JEFF! ur not reading man.. the iphone for pets already has a massager. beat that!

Petmeister's picture

It's all in the name of fun, honey. I think these are all great. I love the soother feature, it would be great to be able to talk to my little dahlings all the time and to reassure them of mommy's love.

Stanley Mccarthy's picture

Chill helen.. chill. Don't get too worked up. Its just an article. lol!

i missed that eh? lol! ok ok.. my bad. how about an iPhone that potty trains? now beat that! lol!

Tashika Roberson's picture

Haha! this is so cool! iPhoneCollar! I sure would love an odor neutralizer, especially when my lil furball poops. it would just spray the poop and the smell is gone. goodness, the smell of cat dung!! ugh!

i would like to know how much it would cost i need 3 of them for my dogs it is a wonderful ideal

what about an i-phone feature that collects stray cat fur and spins them into a nice little i-phone jacket? LOL

Daniel Finney's picture

Got an i-phone!!!! Works just fine thank you. Just perfect does not need anymore additional shessh. Don't think I'll be getting one for my dog its hard enough that my wife wants one too.

Hellen Shelledy's picture

Now don't gang up on me. Am just saying that we can use all these creative juices to come up with something better and more useful. iPhone for dogs are okay. Just don't count on me buying one.

Patrick Ratzenberger's picture

LOL this is cool! Better get myself an iPhone first before I give one to Bud! this reminds me of the iPhone commercial spoof conan o brien did. That was hilarious! how about an iPhoneCollar that sends signals to the dog's brain so that my bud would stop humping the legs of my visitors! Embarasses me when he does that

Megan Turnbull's picture

Did you even read the thing? It's not real!

Simon Dobson's picture

knowing my dog, she'll probably end up chewing her i-phone! so maybe her i-phone should have: 1> special regenerative properties (so it's highly resistant to chewing!), and 2> should taste like savoury beef!

LOL enough of the i-phone already! swear to god it's all about the i-phone all over the place!

Stanley Mccarthy's picture

Yeahh.. dont gang up on my girl helen. shes just upset that she doesnt have an iphone. lol! peace helen!

Michelle Pilver's picture

seriously now. everyone at work is just raving about getting an i-phone, but i terribly doubt that anyone is getting their hands on anything til much much later... then probably it should be obsolete by then

Tomoya Soto's picture

i think dogs would prefer more useful inventions other than a gadget for lazy owners...

Mary Anne Doyle's picture

Hey Tomoya, lighten up! this is supposed to be all in good fun! =)

Corey Allen's picture

for cryin out loud! literally everything is going to the dogs and i mean literally. what is this world turning into? lol

Libby Bowen's picture

I got a feature! A bark/meow recognizing software that will make sure no other pets use the iphone and protect from iphone snatching pets.. lol.

Jennifer Trenton's picture

well now everybody is saying that the i-phone is a lemon. it's not all that its apt to be. i'll just wait for the new and improved version maybe next year.

Irvin Zelasko's picture

with all the unnecessary things insane pet owners give their pets i am genuinely surpised apple hasnt decided to take advantage of obsessed pet owners who might feel their pet needs an i-phone.

Cynthia Winstead's picture

With manufacturers tweaking their product lines to accommodate pets, i'd say that an iPhone for pets is not such a far cry after all! There's a market for people who buy really useless and expensive stuff for pets, anyway!
