ROTORUA, New Zealand: Have cats replaced dogs as man's best friend?
The light-hearted debate over who is man's truest best friend - felines or canines - has raged for time eternal. While dogs are said to be loyal and heroic, cats, with their independent nature, are said to be more aloof and self-centered.
However things may be starting to swing the cat's way. Meet Sylvester, a ginger, part-persian stray adopted by New Zealand woman Patricia Kerr. Those that know Sylvester have always considered him a little odd and anti-social. Neighbors Shirley and Monte Mason told the New Zealand Herald that this feline usually does not want to be touched by anyone but his owner.
However an out-of-character cry for attention by the reclusive pussycat (in the form of a sudden and unusual visit to the Mason's doorstep) instantly told the couple that there was something wrong with Sylvester's owner.
"The cat came over and started meowing loudly at our doorstep," Shirley Mason told the Herald. "He seemed hungry."
The Masons phoned Sylvester's owner Patricia to let her now that her cat was outside but got a busy signal. Thinking that nothing was amiss, the couple set off to attend a funeral. Upon returning, they phoned her again and still, the phone was engaged. Now worried, they went over to their neighbor's house and called out to her. When they got no response, they immediately called the police.
The police found Patricia unconscious in her bathtub, suffering from hypothermia. She was taken to the hospital immediately. Happily, she is now on the road to recovery.
Without Sylvester's attention-seeking behavior and frantic meowing, Patricia would not have been around today to care for her feline saviour.

“Shadow the cat saved her family from a death from carbon monoxide poisoning. Sosa attacked a poisonous snake and held it off from her own, being bitten herself in the process.”

According to about.com, cats resort to excessive vocalization to express their emotions, whether that is wanting to be fed or wanting to be let out. Meowing is your cat's way of communicating with humans. When cats are happy and content, they emit a low meow, the tone of which rises then goes back down again. This emotion is accompanied by purring. When cats are angry, the meowing becomes high-pitched and extremely intense. A frightened cat hisses and spits.
However a distressed cat's call for help is a loud and frantic meow, often becoming repetitive and panicky. Sylvester was said to be anti-social, yet his insistent meowing caught the attention of the Masons. Surprisingly enough, humans, even non-cat lovers, have the uncanny ability to somehow understand a cat's meow.
However, one question still looms. Aloof as they may seem, can these fuzzy felines be heroes in the same way that dogs are regarded as faithful protectors of their human owners? Reportedly there are accounts which prove that cats are indeed loyal and jump to the call of duty when danger strikes. Shadow the cat saved her family from a death from carbon monoxide poisoning. Sosa attacked a poisonous snake and held it off from her own, being bitten herself in the process.
Back in 2002, a cat was reported to have saved a young girl from sexual assault. In 2006, another cat was said to awaken a family in the middle of the night, giving them enough time to escape from a burning house. One smart feline, Tommy, was even reported to have called 911 when his owner fell from a wheelchair due to a stroke.
These are just but a few heroic deeds that cats have done to save their human friends. Sylvester is just one of the many cats who proved that cats can indeed be man's best friend. Perhaps dogs aren't such a clear favourite in the 'man's best friend' stakes after all.
I've always been a cat person- they save me every time from a stress-filled life just by being cute and cuddly!
I've always loved cats. Friends always tease me, saying that it's sissy to have a cat because they are just there, all pretty and prim and proper. Hah! Cats CAN BE a man's best friend. It's more amazing that their size does not stop them from being a hero.
i prefer cats myself having two kitty cats living with me. its just amazing how these furry little balls of cuteness become saviors when needed. i still have to see if my own pets can save me from any danger. for now, their only saving grace is when they wake me up for work especially when i oversleep.
lucy would do that too.. she has to.. after all the spoiling she gets from me.. lol.
A lot of stories have been printed about heroic dogs. Good to see that there are cats too, though unlikely to be heores like dogs, are actually heroes. I am a horse lover. Perhaps petshed could publish heroic horse acts? it would sure shed a different light to horses.
go sylvester, go! =)
maybe it also depends on the cat owner. if you're a bad owner, maybe the cat will have second thoughts on saving your life.
I don't see the point of arguing who is man's bestfriend. There are other animals out there aside from cats and dogs. What if I have a pet iguana? Dogs are just more popular than the rest.
I AGREE wid hellen... my pet is a parrot and he saves me too,.. from insanity! lol! hey pethsed! are ya goin to have a bird section here?
Hooray for Sylvester! I knew it! See? cats are heroes too, even if dog lovers would never agree! My cat's my best friend. Saves me from being lonely.
it's simple and proven theory - treat your pets well and they will return the favor a thousand times.
lesson learned to all pet owners. treat them well, you get unconditional love. if you treat your pets bad, forget that they will ever save you! lol for all we know, your smart cat set up the "accident" because you are a horrible owner and they want you gone! lol
this is an amazing story. cats really do have an uncanny ability that senses when something is amiss or terribly wrong. i have yet to see if my cats will do the same for me and my family. i have a feeling that they will.
i have always have a soft spot for cats. i have two cats myself. it's really quite amazing how sylvester was able to save her owners' life by going to the neighbors' house. i truly believe that when you treat your pets right, they will repay the favor by giving you their utmost love and loyalty.
Amazing how cats can sense that something is wrong with their human friend. Even when out of sight, they still know. When danger strikes, you can always count on your good furry friend to help you - that is if you're nice to them.
i've heard of other stories about cats and dogs who somehow sense that something is wrong with their owners and in their own small way, do something to save their owners' life. i really believe that if you treat your pets well, they will repay you back when the time comes.
