Dog took two days to drown

NORTHERN TERRITORY, Australia: A young dog has drowned after desperately treading water in a flooded trash can for two days, according to reports.

The dog, of unknown breed, was found dumped in a flooded bin near the town of Nhulunbuy in Australia's Northern Territory, according to the Northern Territory News.

Local holiday-makers heard the dog yelping for help for several days as it tried to keep its head above water and tried three times to locate the canine, but to no avail.

The body of the 18-month-old brindle dog, which had reportedly just given birth, was found trapped in a three-foot plastic trash can which had been half-filled with water.

Local animal protection society the RSPCA described it as one of the worst cases of cruelty it had ever seen.

Nhulunbuy president Glenda Webster said a couple anchored nearby on a yacht had heard the dog crying and yelping for several days. They had come ashore on three straight days thinking that the animal must have been caught in nearby mangroves.

"It would have become very tired and drowned," Ms Webster told the News.

"I want to find who did this – people have to know that they just can't treat animals like this."

The couple was reportedly devastated when they found the dog's body.

"I want to make a noise about this incident," Ms Webster said. "They need to know they can't get away with animal cruelty."

This is the worst thing I have ever heard. I'd like to get my hands on the people responsible for this poor dog's suffering and give them the same fate

Oh my God, I can't stop crying thinking about what this poor animal suffered. What are those people thinking? This would never happen where I live

This story makes me horrified, saddened and sick to my soul. Nothing can describe how I terrible I feel about the days suffering and desperate attempt made by this mother dog to survive. The only good thing is that the horror of what she went through is over and she is now resting in God's loving arms. Fortunately that won't the be same fate for the people who did this to her!! Remember, God does not sleep!!

This horrible person needs to be found and punished! Why would you do something so cruel?

Reading through the feedback left by "Angela" , I hate to tell her but this kind of cruelty goes on everywhere. To believe that "It can't happen here" is incredibly naive. I've been involved in animal rescue for many years, and tragically, this is not even necessarily the worst case of abuse I've heard of.... right here in the good ol' USA. Even if the SOB is caught, you can bet you bottom dollar that the punishment will not fit the crime. People just get a slap on the wrist. I pray that I will live long enough to see the day when humans are enlightened to the horrible crimes that are committed against animals every day, everywhere and that anyone who acts in such a horrid manner is punished accordingly!

My heart is broken to know what happened to that poor dog. One thing that is known about cruelty is that it originates somewhere. Often the abuser has been abused and the abuse continues. It seems that many times a poor innocent animal becomes the victim. I do hope that more education can help a would-be abuser to help them to prevent any future abuse by them. I feel so very sad for that little dog and the many other victims of cruelty. I do believe that if more people were to know the Lord God and to know His love, there would be less of this. I pray for whoever did this that they would come to the Lord and ask for forgivness and fot His help.

I would like to tell Angela that she is very naive,(I don't mean that in a bad way), if she thinks that doesn't happen in TN. The southern states are the worst places for pets. The anti-cruelty laws are the most lax and most dogs and cats that are brought to the Humane Animal shelter are farmed out to other states, like Milwaukee Wisconsin Humane Society, because people are more willing to adopt here. If she feels that way, it is best to contact the Humane Society and see what she can do to help.

I wish I waws there I wouldn't stopped until I found the dog. Who ever did this will have something come back on them, this person is evil, heartless, I am so upset I cant type. I pray to god the dog is with him.

The earth, the animals, are god, we must protect and love them or we are gone. I lost my dog last year peppy I had my baby for 15 years I still miss him. When I retire I will be there for every animal curelty case. the people will get what they deserve.

that is just so unbelievably sad! i don't know which is more disappointing- the fact that some miscreant dumped the poor thing in a flooded garbage bin, or that nobody even bothered to mount a decent search-and-rescue effort for the poor dog- they had at least 2 days!

Terrible. This is just terrible. i can't believe that there are cruel people out there who think that helpless pups are experiments - "i bet you this pup can swim for 2 days!" OH! This makes me so angry!!!

how sad. this is a sad day for dog lovers like me. i can't imagine how people can be so cruel to animals. i wish they catch whoever did this to that poor dog.

They need to find out who placed that poor dog into that barrel and do the same thing to them, see how they would like to tread water and fear for their lives for two horrific days. Humans can be the worst animal alive. How terrible for that dog. We can only hope he is in doggy heaven with others like him, happy and content.

whoever did this horrible thing to that dog, may you always feel guilty about what you did. i really cant believe people like that exist.

i just can't understand how some people can be so cruel to animals. take for example that Michael Vick guy. he put up this dog fighting place and even killed dogs that did not do well in the fights. its just sad and disturbing.

I've had the worst week. My loving best friend riley drowned in my swimming pool monday night. He was 19 yrs old in bad health, however I just cant get over this horrible night. I took him out to bathroom and started looking for some keys. It seemed like a few minutes and I looked around he was in the pool. I let him down. I should have done a better job of watching him.
