Pigeon Newest NASA Mascot

Pigeon lovers rejoice! The National Aeronautics and Space Administration is using a pigeon as hero in one of its interactive websites aimed at introducing space-based science and exploration to schoolchildren. 'The Adventures of Amelia the Pigeon' is NASA's interactive web- site that introduces the concept of remote sensing in environmental monitoring. Remote sensing is the use of satellites with special sensory equipment to monitor large areas of the earth for small changes. 'Amelia the Pigeon' is the second interactive website in the IMAGERS (Interactive Multimedia Adventures for Grade-school Education using Remote Sensing) program, following the success of Echo the Bat, an interactive website that explains the underlying principles used in remote sensing. Amelia the Pigeon was developed at the Laboratory of Terrestrial Physics over at the Goddard Space Flight Center with the purpose of stimulating school children's interest in the space-based sciences via hands-on investigations and online explorations embedded in a sequential storytelling format.
