CHICAGO, Illinois: Its finally summertime and you're ready for that long deserved vacation. Your car is stuffed with luggage, clothes, tent, skis, children and assorted equipment - you've forgotten nothing, right? Wrong. Where will you put your pet?
More and more people are now looking for pet-friendly cars (complete with amenities) to make each trip as memorable and as comfortable as possible for both human and pet alike. In fact, according to a recent study done by the American Kennel Club, 45% of dog owners are on the lookout for the most pet-friendly cars on the market today. Car companies are moving quickly to harness this new demographic by designing vehicles which are more suited to and comfortable for hauling your pet dog or cat.
Gone are the days when Fido was simply chucked in in the back of the pick-up truck. today we know how stressful this can actually be for your pet. While they may look like they are enjoying themselves, often they are struggling to stay in the vehicle.
Car companies are fast becoming more pet-friendly by putting in specially-designed pet features as a standard option for interested car buyers. The top consideration and the most important of which is, of course, safety and comfort for both human and pet. One example is Honda's W.O.W (Wonderful Open-Hearted Wagon) which features a glove apartment designed specifically to carry pets so drivers can interact with them safely while driving
Some car manufacturers are pushing the boundaries of what can be considered a 'pet-mobile'. Here are some of the better examples:
Subaru
Subaru's Outback wagon and Forester variant features steel barriers separating the cargo area from the back seat, while vehicle flooring is protected by washable rubber or plastic mats.

Volvo
Volvo's S80 model, boasts a trunk which can be divided in two with removable grilles, transforming it into a functional pet carrier complete with a front gate. Volvo vehicles now have nets connecting the backrests of their front or rear seats to the ceiling to partition your pet from the front passengers. Meanwhile, four metal dividers have been added in the cargo hold for wagons and SUVs.
Saab
Saab's 9-3 SportCombi and 9-5 SportCombi wagons have cargo space which can be divided in two with dividers to accommodate pets and cargo. Rear flooring is protected by cargo mats, cargo apron and cargo guard, while the 9-5 SportCombi wagon also makes use of a trunk tray.

It's really good that the community of pet lovers is growing!! they are making everything more comfy for our pets. I love the Honda WOW concept - a car built for pets especially!
It's good that they are coming up with pet friendly cars. but doesn't really matter with cats. You carry cats in carriages or portable cages. they despise car rides and run a havoc when they don't know where you are taking them. so for cat owners, any car where the portable cage would fit is fine.
With all the extra pet features these cars are definitely more expensive. nice but not budget-friendly.
the honda wow model is really something! its quite funny actually. instead of the normal glove compartment, it has a glove apartment made for your pets. i just feel that the pet might feel cramped or nervous while inside that thing.
i think that's excellent customer service. good to know these car companies are keeping its clientele in mind!
hey that Honda WOW sounds great! i should keep an eye out for that!
its good to hear that car companies are finally putting in pet friendly amenities in their cars. keep them coming!
What if i have a ferrari? where in it can i put my dog? lol!
Honda WOW. Looks like a girly car though, made for little dogs. I thing my Buddy's head would be the only thing that would fit in that glove apartment! lol! I sure would love to have one of those SUVs. It would be perfect and comfy for my Bud especially on our out of town trips.
hey what about designing a glove apartment for a big dog like a labrador? i prefer big dogs but if i do get the Honda WOW, how can my dog fit in that small thing?
well, this is good that finaly some companies are answering the prayers of pet loving consumers. i own a cat. i don't need these cars coz cats are happy in their own little crate for travelling. they don't enjoy looking out the windows and get stressed when taken to a new environment.
stanley: i've been having the same worries about my maserati. its not exactly pet friendly. lol!
oooohhh that Honda WOW is so cute! i would love to have a car like that with my doggie.
Well the boys surely have some nice problems.. ferrari.. maserati.. tsk. lol.
This is not for me. My poodle loves car rides. But i don't think the Honda WOW would work for her. she loves to stand on the passenger seat of the car and look out the window. she loves seeing the sights. She would hate it if i put her in that glove apartment!
No problem with me and my cats. Just put them in a carrier and they can stay in the passenger side of my yellow Lamborghini! LOL
with all these features they might as well consider coming up with a car for dogs and let the dogs do the driving.. lol!
i really don't think that my cat would enjoy staying inside that glove apartment. she might just start clawing inside or might start running inside the car.
did car manufacturers go this far for children during travel? i mean we got all this features for pets.. so what if you got a pet and a kid? the pet's all cozy and nice and ur kid is just slumped there.
Hey kids are not just "slumped there." there are car seats made for them. there's seatbelts too for protection.
apparently this age is all for keeping ur pets safe during travel and showering them with all possible and unnecessary things and making sure you have custody of them.. who cares about raising good men and women anymore? i think in pets some people find the need to nourish but minus the responsibilty needed when you care for a human being.
Those cars are catered to dog-loving individuals, not cats. Cats are happy just lying and sleeping inside their familiar carrier. No need for those special floorings or whatchamacallits
