Now that's a kennel

SAN FRANCISCO, California: Plasma TVs. Wall paintings. Facials and massages. Private spas. And that's just for the pets.

In fact it's all for the pets. Welcome to the Wag Hotel, a pet-only luxury resort boasting 24-hour staffing, an indoor swimming pool, fish tank and two meals a day for each of its lucky four-legged furry guests.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the second 239-room dog-and-cat-exclusive pet palace has just opened in San Francisco, two years after the first one opened in Sacramento in 2005.

The three-story, 35,000-square-foot hotel has a 5600-gallon indoor swimming pool, a 10,000-square-foot rooftop lawn with million-dollar views of the San Francisco skyline as well as spacious indoor play areas giving "guests" the chance to romp and stretch their legs to their heart's content during their stay, the Chronicle said.

The Wag Hotel isn't your average pet retreat. The emphasis is on luxury, with bed linen changed daily, individually-prepared meals and individual lounges, the Mercury News reported . Luxury suites contain plasma TVs screening doggie-themed cartoons and Animal Planet programming, as well as video cameras allowing owners to pay a virtual visit at a moment's notice.

Pampered pooches can be spoiled with classical music, spas, massages, blueberry facials, "paw-dicures" and other grooming treats. According to the Mercury, Wag also has its own designer brand of shampoo and conditioner.

Not surprisingly, such luxury doesn't come cheap. Rooms range from $45 to $85 a night, sessions in the swimming pool cost $25 while a blueberry facial will also set you back 25 bones.

Cats owner can rest assured that their felines have not been forgotten, with the pet palace boasting two-story cat condos (with private bathrooms and a view of a freshwater aquarium) for $20 a night, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"As a pet owner and frequent traveler, I know how important it is to have a place that ensures the health and safety of my bulldog, Zoebee -- and that's why I created Wag," Wag Hotels CEO Ritu Raj told the Houston Chronicle.

"In the last three or four years, an animal that was a good friend or a guard dog has now become a member of our family," he said.

Raj said at least 50 people have already booked stays for their pets. Last year, the Sacramento hotel accommodated 2,000 pets for a total of 25,000 nights.

Expansion plans through 2008 include hotels in Sunnyvale and Oakland, and throughout Southern California.

Oh wow, I can't wait until one of these places opens near where I live. I think it would be great for my dogs to be spoiled on a holiday like this. I think I'd miss them though - a good enough reason for to have a holiday too !

What a fantastic idea!! Think I'd have to lift my standard of vacation accommodation if I was to put my pooch in Wag. Can't really have the pet enjoying their hotel more than me...

Wow, that IS a kennel.... looks better than some of the dives I have have enjoyed (sarcasm) over the years. I love San Fransisco, and would consider checking in myself, but I think I'd find the food a bit bland and hard to stomach....

seriously. we need more hotels with accomodations for pets. i hate it when i have to go on vacation and still worry about my dawgie. i'd really love to just take her with me when i go out of town, but unfortunately, not many places have provisions for pets.

Oh this is so cool! I always have to leave my dogs somewhere when I go out of town. On some cases, I even have to leave them in my house. A family member just checks on them everyday. It;s a huge worry for me. I can't wait til it opens here.. well, i hope they do! At least i know my dogs will have the pampering they deserve and that they will be given a 5-star treatment.

Interesting. only limited to big timers tho. Simple folks like us just have to drool. Heck! i don't even get those amenities when i go on vacation!

i wish i can afford it though. its so expensive. im sure my pooch would love it. this is crazy! literally everything is going to the dogs! and that's in a good way!

Regina McKee's picture

Wow. this is what you call a pampered pooch. something like where hollywood stars would take their dogs too. I wonder if they have one for cats? or if they ever will have one for cats? how come it's all just for dogs? unfair! but then again, if there were a hotel for cats, it would be a madhouse! cats screaming at each other, real cat fights.. lol ok. leave it to the dogs to have these things.

This will be a perfect birthday gift for my yorkie. Peppie would love this. She loves it when people make a fuss over her and who wouldn't she's just so adorable.

I don't mind shelling out cash for my dogs. They make me happy and they keep me young. I think it would be better if there is a hotel or a spa for pets AND the owners. It would be nice to be pampered together.

Now that's what I call dog heaven! What a way to spoil your dogs! I might just try it first with one of my dogs. I just hope that she doesn't bug me to always bring her there.

whoa! i cant believe that there is actually a place like this! i dont know whether i would take it seriously or think that whoever thought of this is crazy. its just hilariously funny. imagine literally making money with something like this. lol

do we really have to spoil our pets so much? i mean c'mon...they're just animals. its just crazy how people are becoming bonkers over them. even though we love them, shouldn't there be a limit to how much we should really give them?

LOL, i don't see no pampering hotels of stuff for horses. Imagine how huge that place has to be! Just a thought...
