Arrow Misses Labrador's Heart by Inches

An aluminum arrow shaft moored like an anchor was found in the chest of a two-year old Labrador owned by a Michigan couple. The arrow almost smashed the heart of the Labrador when it attached itself to the dog's chest until its better-late-than-never discovery.

The Labrador named Remington was adopted by Scott and Kelly Cornelisse from a colleague. After six months since joining the couple, the once eager dog became a crestfallen canine. As Remington got sluggish and downhearted each day, the couple became worried. Scott gave the Lab a look over and noticed a hump in the dog's torso. The protrusion was suspected to be a fractured bone.

X-ray examination confirmed that the protrusion was an eight-and-a-half-inch aluminum arrow shaft which had been in the dog's chest for an unknown length of time. Dr. Steven Harden of Clarke Animal Hospital revealed that the dog's heart was fortunately spared and that the case was unusual considering the fact that the Labrador managed to stay alive despite the injury. He added that the wound at the point of entry had already healed when the dog was brought to his attention.

It only took a three-minute surgical procedure by Dr. Harden himself to add more happy years to Remington's life. Scott and Kelly Cornelisse were elated when the metal was finally removed and were grateful because the surgery was free of charge.

Remington is now recuperating. Scott and Kelly are comfortable stroking the dog's part of the chest where the arrow was once lodged, pleased that they could feel it no more.

It was never determined how the arrow made its way to Remington's chest nor the culprit identified. Cupid perhaps?

was the arrow from a crossbow? either intentional or accidental, people should be careful in handling those things. Yay! for the dog! If only Labradors were a not docile breed, i'd wish Remington a chance to find out who shot him and give him a big nasty bite

maybe bow and crossbow hunters need a little seminar on compassion.

Poor dog. Perhaps he was made a practice target by some hunter wannabe. Such a cruel thing to do.
