A Tale Of Two Cats

One would think that it is mathematically improbable to talk about three heads and nine limbs when it only involves two cats. But a cat from Pennsylvania and another from Kedah, Malaysia defied mathematical and genetic logic when they were born with an extra limb and an extra head, respectively.

The cat from Pennsylvania named Babygirl was born with five legs. The extra leg was crippled thus limiting the cat's movement. Veterinarians decided to amputate the two legs which were apparently causing pain. Babygirl is now a three-legged feline bound to be adopted as soon as she recovers and could stand on her own.

On the other hand (or paw for that matter), things could have been normal for the kitten from Kedah, Malaysia if not for the extra head. Each head has its own set of mouth, eyes, and nose. The kitten is “furfectly” healthy and as of the last count, has four legs.

As of this writing, there is no indication if the cat will have to undergo a surgery to correct the abnormality.

My heart goes out to both cats. I've heard that there are already advances in corrective surgery for animals, especially for deformed or missing legs. One is called rapid prototyping. But about the extra head... well, it's good to know though that it's doing well.

what possible mutagen could have caused this?

i hope the cat from Kedah survives. from what i hear most of these kinds of animals, the ones born with abnormalities, die an early death

i always pity animals born like this, especially if those extra limbs hinder them from living a quality life

i've heard that one of the causes of the abnormality are hazardous substances ingested by the mother while pregnant.
