Santa Clara Board of Supervisors vetoed an anti-animal cruelty ordinance that would ban rodeos and circuses. The broad anti-animal cruelty ordinance would ban the use of devices that inflicts some form of pain on wild, exotic and rodeo animals.
Proponents and supporters of the ordinance cite the use of tight straps and spurs on rodeo horses, and that circuses use whips on animals. San Jose, California county officials who have studied the ordinance say that there are far reaching consequences that the ordinance will touch on concerns other than rodeos and circuses. One example is that the ordinance might prohibit ranchers from roping their herd. Opposition to the ordinance also cite that both the rodeos and circuses are already being tightly regulated and that such regulations already include humane treatment to animals. If approved, the ordinance would have ceased any activity commonly seen in rodeos and circuses which is a popular event in the county.

one wonders when a regulation banning the use of knives on meat animals will come.
the provisions of the ordinance should be carefully reviewed before it becomes a law. it may have some implications on existing laws related to circuses, rodeos, and other forms of entertainment involving animals.
