Information about Heartgard

Heartgard is a monthly medication for the prevention of heartworms in dogs. Heartgard tablets prevent heartworm disease in dogs by eliminating the heartworm larvae that infect the dog in the month before treatment. Heartgard also controls heartworm infections acquired in the previous four months, provided monthly treatment is continued for at least 12 months.

Heartgard has a wide safety margin in all breeds of dogs, including pregnant females, breeding bitches, stud dogs and puppies six weeks of age and older. Dogs over six months of age should be tested for heartworm disease prior to using Heartgard, and tested annually thereafter.
