| Just curious. What are the signs of heartworm disease in dogs? I have a cuddly Shih Tzu whom I love so much and I don't want him to get afflicted with any disease, including this one. |

i learned this from my girl friend Jessica who's also a huge dog lover herself, some signs of heartworm disease in dogs are loss of appetite and coughing.

| Beatrice is right. Aside from what she cited, coughing and difficulty breathing are also signs of canine heartworm disease. |

| You may also notice that a dog seems to tire rapidly after moderate exercise. |

| Heartworms are really deadly. You should have your dogs checked once in a while. It is treatable, but preventing it is still the better option. |

the good news is heartworm disease is almost 100% preventable in dogs. pet owners can choose among the many heartworm preventives available in a variety of formulations. vets can suggest the best method of heartworm disease prevention. |

| A great rule of thumb is when you notice something's not right or different with your dog, rush him to the doctor. |

Heartworms can be fatal so we should really be careful when it comes to these parasites! I agree with Joseph; prevention of heartworm disease should be one of our priorities when it comes to our pets. |

Hey, Douglas, I just want to say, Thanks dude! It's been a while since somebody last agreed with me. LOL!
I looked up heartworm in a veterinary book. It says there that dogs and cats get different reactions from these parasites. And that it's harder to treat a cat with heartworms.
Is there anybody here who was able to treat their dog or cat's heartworm disease? If yes, how did you do it? |

No prob, Joseph! Anyway, we are all kindred souls here in Petshed. "Petshedders" may not always agree but I am very very sure that we all agree in one respect:
WE ALL LOVE OUR PETS! |

| the thing about heartworms is that they're not easily detected. your dog may actually go for months without displaying any symptom of heartworm. that's why it's necessary for pet owners to have their dog checked for heartworms regularly. |

| heartworms are prevalent during warm season. usually, that's spring to early fall. in the US, heartworms are more commonplace in southeastern and midwestern states. |

it's also important to keep in mind that all dogs, no matter what size or breed, are prone to heartworm. so don't be so complacent. |

yes, totally. they say heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes - judging with how quickly mosquitoes spread, we'll never know if an area is totally heartworm-free. we should really be careful wherever we are. |

mosquitoes are not the only ones that can spread heartworms, although they are probably the most ideal and common host. i think i've read somewhere that other insects can also be carriers of heartworms. |

i agree! good if you live in a lower risk area but this does not mean your pet is already safe from heartworms. |

| exactly, jennifer. we shouldn't depend alone on the level of risk present in a certain area. heartworms can be everywhere! |
