Guys, is it safe to give a dog a wormer med even if the owner's not sure if the dog has worms in the first place?

from what i know, puppies may start getting worm treatment when they're 2 to 3 weeks old. this is because most puppies either are born with worms or are infected soon after birth. as for dogs, i suggest it is best to ask your vet.

Hmm, from what i've read, wormers, the preventive ones, are safe to use even if your pet has virtually no worms to start with. But to be 100% sure, just check with the vet. Wink

hmm... while it may seem harmless to give a dog wormers when the animal doesn't even have worms in the first place, i won't say that it's perfectly safe. keep in mind that some wormers may have side-effects that may cause health problems in your pets. so unless you're absolutely certain that your dog is infested with worms, i say lay off the meds.

You mentioned about the side effects, eleni. What are these?

Side effects? I read that there really are no significant side effects to wormers.

To give an idea, I suggest you read the following:
