This question is for long time dog owners.
How long did it take you to get over your dog's passing and take in a new dog? |

| It's never easy letting go. This is the greatest disadvantage of having a pet dog; you will always outlive it. A dog is man's best friend and losing one is certainly a devastating affair. |

When my dog Tammy died almost five years ago, it took me half a year to recover from its loss and get a new pet. And this I must tell you, no matter how much time has passed, his memory lingers and lives on. |

When I saw the title of this thread I said to myself: "I don't wanna visit this thread since it's just gonna make me sad." You know what? I did visit it and now I'm crying
Anyway, we are all pet lovers here in Petshed and we shouldn't be shy in sharing our feelings with regard to our pets. Cheer up everyone! Our hurt feelings when losing a pet just shows how much we love them! |

| It took me several months. I think the length of time to get over your grief for a pet varies from one pet owner to another. It doesn't matter how quick or how slow you get over as long as you give yourself enough time to heal and accept your pet's loss. When you think you've recovered enough and have regained lots of love to give, then it's about time to get a new pet. |

| I feel like is should comment something, even tho i have yet to experiance a loss with one of my pets and i am still new here, my heart still aches for anyone out there that has to go thru the grieving, i can only imagine. But the one thing i do want to say is even tho they are gone - just sit back and reflect on the life that they have lived, all the warm memories that they have given you, if they could tell you - you know thats what they would say. you gave them the best life you could and that was great. Once you are ready move on and like others have posted i am sure it will take the time only you can determine, it varies. then give the next little guy that love and caring your previous experianced. |

well said kellee. when you give your pets the best life you could give them when they were still alive, then that's the most important thing. pets may come and go but their memories linger forever. |

| i don't wanna go through such grief but if ever that happens, i'd be really sad! i'll regularly place flowers on my pet's grave and say a little prayer for him everyday. but that's the way life is and everyone dies. what i'll do is i'll give enough time for myself to grieve for him but once i'm ready, i'll bounce back and move on, ready to take care of a new pet. |

| Many months! But that's the way life is. We just have to accept the fact that our pets die but the memories they leave behind stick with us for rest of our life. |

when our first dog died, my daughter grieved for weeks until we got a new dog.
i think it depends on how much time or how many memories you have shared with your dog.
in any case, seeing any animal die makes me sad. |
